Road Washed Away 27/11/11

The tide tables warned us we could have a high spring tide of 8.4m last night, however Spurn was faced with an incredible tide of almost 10m! One lady attempted to drive through the flooded road, only to become stuck. With the waves hitting the vehicle and the lady unable to get out the lifeboat men were called to help. The road was buried under around a metre of water, but the lady was safely removed from the vehicle, and a few hours later the men returned to a scene of devastation. The car and road have taken quite a beating from mother nature, which I captured this morning.

The Humber Crew Returning from Grimsby

The weather forecast predicted strong westerly winds, and that is exactly what we got! Last night the Humber Lifeboat Crew were forced to 'bail out' from their station on Spurn Point, and take the boat to Grimsby for the night. This means getting up throughout the night to check the boat and move it if required, so not a lot of sleep.
It was a bit of a challenge taking these photographs of the boat returning home, with the wind trying to knock me over and the sand whipping my face. However, I managed to get a few with the strong winds and lumpy swell making for some interesting pictures.

Fundraising Opera at The Guildhall, Hull

The brave crew of Humber Lifeboat are all given one night of the year off together. Relief crew are bought in to cover the station, and all the crew are invited to join a fundraising event. This year was our first chance to join our neighbours in an evening of good food, great music and even better company. We all had a fantastic time, and an amazing £8,000 (or so) was raised for the fantastic charity: the RNLI.

Me and Pete.

Remembrance Sunday - RHS

We went to visit The Royal Hospital School, Ipswich, for the Remembrance Sunday Parade and service. Pete boarded at the school for five years, along with his two brothers James and Charlie. We all enjoyed a fantastic warm day of sunshine, along with Pete's Mum, Mark and his Grandparents.

Remembrance Day 11th November 2011

Today we saw the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, of the year two thousand and eleven! (or 11-11-11 for short). At 11am the crew of Humber Lifeboat took part in a moments silence, at The Royal Dock, in Grimsby. They joined some brave war veterans, current serving military personel and members of the public to lay a wreath and remember the lives that have been lost.

"Remember, remember the fifth of November..."

The residents of Spurn Point dug out their vests, hats and scarfs to spend the evening outside - with bright sparklers, a sizzling fire and a brilliant display of fireworks! After the fireworks we had a feast of bbq-ed sausages and burgers, chilli, curry, soup, jacket potatoes, chicken dippers and chips (and maybe a drink or two....)

Superintendent Coxswain Dave and his wife Karen.

Guy Fawkes is starting to feel the heat...

Everyone grateful for the hot soup! Thanks Rachel and Steve!

Halloween on Spurn Point

The residents of Spurn Point gathered together as darkness fell, Monday evening, for a brilliant excuse for a party. We had from spiderwebs to vampires, from wolves to witches, and pumkins to devils - and everyone had a spooktacular time (sorry, it had to be done!)

"Ooh, scary..."

"And there was blood everywhere!" This is Dave telling stories to the little ones.

"I've got my eye on you!" (apologies again) This is my masterpiece of a cake.
